Special guests for this Meditation Monday

The Great Wisdom Buddhist Institute (“GWBI”) nuns will be facilitating a short 30 minute non-religious guided meditation session on May 17 at 8am ET. Participants will experience a series of three short guided meditations as a way to ease into the start of the week. The nuns will also share a few tips that have been helpful in their practice. We will open up for any questions during the last ten minutes.

Great Wisdom Buddhist Institute is a monastery for Buddhist nuns located in Prince Edward Island, Canada. The 450 nuns come from various countries and backgrounds and range from 12-75. But one thing is in common: the aspiration to increase everyone’s well being. To that end, their entire daily monastic routine is predicated on mindfulness. In addition, they undergo a specialized 15-year program, The Five Great Treatises Curriculum, with roots in Tibetan Buddhism and includes texts, some of which are rapidly disappearing from the world. To preserve them, a team of monastics (Amrita Translation Foundation, “ATF”), including GWBI nuns, works closely with Buddhist Digital Resource Center (“BDRC”) and Harvard University Digital Repository Service. These texts include documentation of the meditation practice of Buddhist practitioners starting more than 2,000 years ago. The facilitators have lived and studied in the monastery ranging from seven to 17 years. By breathing this ancient wisdom on a daily basis, they hope to extract the key essence of their learnings and how-to-avoid-missteps into bite-sized pieces to apply in everyday life. Since late 2017, these facilitators have gone around to over 40 organizations to conduct mindfulness sessions for over 3,500 participants.
