Scholarly Writing Seminar Series for Clinicians and Clinician Educators

March 10 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm EDT

IMPORTANT: A participant must attend BOTH sessions in the series.

A series for MGH clinical faculty with HMS academic appointments.

This two-part series will help clinicians improve their scholarly writing. The course will be most valuable for those who desire to improve their writing skills and productivity. Participants will learn how to:
• Clarify interests and goals
• Select a target audience for writing
• Create an outline
• Avoid obsessive perfectionism

Facilitator: Theodore Stern, MD, Ned H. Cassem Professor of Psychiatry in the Field of Psychosomatic Medicine/Consultation, HMS; Chief Emeritus of the Avery D. Weisman, MD, Psychiatry Consultation Service, Interim Director of the Center for Faculty Development, and Director of the Office for Clinical Careers, MGH; Editor-in-Chief of Psychosomatics

Part I
Date: Tuesday, March 10, 2020
Time: 12:00 to 1:30 PM

This session will serve to determine what is of interest for clinicians in different disciplines and then to outline one or two clinical reports. We will model a process for turning clinical cases into educational/clinically relevant publications, with creation of components based upon questions (e.g., who, what., where, when, why, and how) and division of labor. Following this session collaborators will draft responses to the questions asked and will email them to Dr. Stern within the next 10 days.

Part II
Date: Tuesday, March 31, 2020
Time: 12:00 to 1:30 PM

This session will discuss the editorial/wordsmithing process. Dr. Stern will review and discuss his edits of the revised manuscript(s) and guide collaborators through the submission/revision process.

Registration to both parts is required.
