How to become a better mentor – Optimizing the Mentor-Mentee Relationship

November 16, 2023 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm EST

In this very interactive 2×2-hour workshop, participants explored approaches to advancing their mentoring practice. Drs. Anne Levy and Marjorie Oettinger facilitated learning through case studies, drawing on the evidence-based resources of CIMER (Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research), through which both facilitators have been trained.

Facilitators:
Anne Levy, PhD, is the Senior Program Manager at the Center for Faculty Development, where she is actively involved in many mentoring initiatives, including speed mentoring, peer mentoring, and men allies in action. She also mentors faculty on honing their HMS CVs for promotion consideration. While Manager of Faculty Affairs for the HMS Department of Ophthalmology, she managed the departmental mentoring program, which received the HMS Program Award for Culture of Excellence in Mentoring in 2019.

Margie Oettinger, PhD, is a Professor of Genetics at HMS and Member of the Molecular Biology Department at MGH. She established the MGH Postbaccalaureate Association that focuses on networking and professional development of CRCs, RAs and Research Techs at MGH. She serves as Co-Chair of the HMS Female Leader’s in Science Gender Equity Committee. She received the Dean’s Innovation in Education Award for her HMS program, “Opening the Doors to Empathy and Understanding Through the Arts: An Arts and Dementia Mentoring Initiative.” In addition to faculty mentorship training, Dr. Oettinger runs CIMER workshops to help trainees make the most of their relationships with mentors.
