Mentor Training: How to become a better mentor – Optimizing the Mentor-Mentee Relationship

In this very interactive 2×2-hour workshop, participants will explore approaches to advancing their mentoring practice. Drs. Anne Levy and Marjorie Oettinger will facilitate learning through case studies, drawing on the evidence-based resources of CIMER (Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research), through which both facilitators have been trained.

Facilitators:

Anne Levy, PhD, is the Senior Program Manager at the Center for Faculty Development, where she is actively involved in many mentoring initiatives, including speed mentoring, peer mentoring, and men allies in action. She also mentors faculty on honing their HMS CVs for promotion consideration.While Manager of Faculty Affairs for the HMS Department of Ophthalmology, she managed the departmental mentoring program, which received the HMS Program Award for Culture of Excellence in Mentoring in 2019.

Margie Oettinger, PhD is a Professor of Genetics at HMS and the Molecular Biology Department at MGH. Margie earned her undergraduate degree in biochemistry at Harvard, attended the Health Science and Technology program at HMS and received her PhD from MIT before joining the faculty at MGH and HMS. Her research focuses on the mechanism and regulation of the development of the B and T cell antigen receptors during lymphoid cell maturation. A certified CIMER facilitator, she serves as the co-Director of the new HMS Core for Mentorship Excellence and is the co-Director of Gender Equity for Faculty in Science at HMS under the Office of Clinical and Academic Affairs. In addition to facilitating mentorship workshops for faculty and students, she is a facilitator for the Arts and Dementia Program at HMS and the Resilience Training Program of the NIH Office for Intramural Training and Education. She is the founding faculty advisor for the MGH Postbaccalaureate Association that supports the professional and personal development of CRCs, RAs and Research Techs at MGH. She is a recipient of the Dean’s Innovation in Education Award for her HMS program “Opening the Doors to Empathy and Understanding Through the Arts: An Arts and Dementia Mentoring Initiative.”
