Social Media Series Session 1: “How to Use Social Media to Announce and Disseminate Your Scholarly Work”

Session 1 of the Social Media Series

With the explosion of social media use in recent years, there has been an evolution of the potential role that social media can play in academic advancement and research dissemination. In this lecture, Dr. Oxentenko highlighted the role that social media has in research branding, starting with the basics of how to create a social media profile and postings that are most effective for research dissemination and branding, and then detailing ways that social media can be used to improve citations, H-index, and ultimately academic rank.

Presenter: Amy Oxentenko, MD, is a Professor and Chair of Internal Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Arizona, and also serves as the Vice Chair for Mayo Clinic’s Clinical Practice Committee. She is a gastroenterologist specializing in celiac disease and other small bowel disorders, and serves on the American College of Gastroenterology’s Executive Team, currently as Treasurer. She has been the recipient of Mayo’s Department of IM Distinguished Contributions to Medical Education Award, Mayo Clinic School of GME Program Director of the Year Award, Minnesota’s ACP Laureate Award, and was awarded the Mayo Clinic Distinguished Educator Award. She was named the 2020 Woman Disruptor of the Year by Healio GI and has been named as one of the “top 100 alumni” by her undergraduate alma mater. She has used social media presence (Twitter @AmyOxentenkoMD) as a platform to advance issues in diversity, equity and inclusion, leadership lessons and research dissemination.
