Parenting Series Panel: “Parenting Children with Medical/Physical Disabilities”

December 7, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm EST

Parenting Child with Physical disability

The Parenting Series is an Office for Women’s Careers initiative focused on well-being and work-life balance for MGH faculty and trainee parents. Each session includes a panel of people with lived experience sharing their thoughts as well as an expert in the field to stimulate discussion and share information on a topic relevant to managing parenthood.

In the academic hospital setting, medical and physical disabilities are often front and center in our work, but nothing prepares us as parents to learn that our child(ren) must live with a disability. As parents, how do we support and encourage our child(ren) on this path? We have brought together this panel of parents to share their experiences confronting challenges they never expected, navigating through their own stress and worry to embrace and celebrate the life of their children. Dr. Nimec will also serve as an expert in this space to share ideas and resources to help parents. This will be a safe space for all attendees to share their stories and gain insight and advice.

Panelists:
Matthew F. Gardiner, MD, Director, Ophthalmology Emergency, Consult, and Hospitalist Services
Yamini Howe, MD, Development Behavioral Pediatrician, Lurie Center for Autism
Donna L. Nimec, MD, Director, Pediatric Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
Jillian Wise, PhD, Instructor, MGH Cancer Center
